Summary
"Few definitive articles have been written in English about "dit" names and name variations so please forgive me if my generalizations are too general. There seem to be many explanations as to how, where and why "dit" names evolved. It is not super important to know how they came about but we should know how to deal with them. Current wisdom is that many "dit" names originated in the military as a way of identifying people with the same first or last name. Others were created to designate a person's profession, station in life, place of origin, or personal qualities and traits." - Editor's note
