"Gayl Jones was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1949. She received her bachelor of arts degree in English at Connecticut College and her master of arts and doctor of arts degrees, both in creative writing, at Brown university. She has taught at Wellesley College and the University of Michigan. Her critically acclaimed books include the novels Corregidora, Eva's Man, The Healing, Mosquito, and, most recently, Palmares, in which many of the characters in these poems appear"--Page [193].
